Officers (2015-2016 Academic Year)

AGN Constitution

Article 1: Name

This organization shall be named Astronomy Graduate Network. In this constitution and the corresponding bylaws it is referred to as AGN.

Article 2: Purpose

The AGN has the following objectives:

Article 3: Membership

Membership to AGN is open to all students, staff and faculty affiliated with the Cornell Astronomy Department and / or Space Sciences building.

Article 4: Officers

  1. AGN shall have the following elected officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Web Administrator.
  2. The officers shall be elected by a majority vote (50% +1) cast at the annual Officer Election meeting held during the spring semester.
  3. All officers shall hold office for a period of one year beginning at the start of the following academic year, with a transition period during the summer.
  4. No member may serve in the office of President or Vice President for more than two consecutive years.
  5. In the event of the resignation of one of the current officers, appointment to the position shall be made by the current set of officers with the approval of the faculty Advisor. The exception to this shall be the resignation of the President; in this event the Vice President shall assume the office of President and a Vice President shall be appointed as described above. All appointments to vacated officer’s positions shall occur within two weeks from the effective date of the vacancy.

Article 5: Advisor

AGN shall have an Advisor acting as senior counselor. The Advisor shall be a member of AGN and a member of the faculty or full-time staff of Cornell University.

Article 6: Meetings

General meetings shall be held as planned by the Executive Board.

Article 7: Quorum

A quorum of AGN shall be defined as 50 % of voting membership.

Article 8: Amendments

Amendments to AGN's Constitution and Bylaws may be carried only with the approval of two thirds of all voting members.

Article 9: Ratification

This constitution shall take effect with the approval of two-thirds of all present members.

AGN Bylaws

Article 1: Dues

No dues shall be collected as requirement for membership.

Article 2: Officer Responsibilities

  1. The President shall act as chief executive officer of AGN and shall be responsible for leading AGN, managing its activities (both academic and social), for communicating between AGN and the Astronomy Department, and for re-registering AGN with the Student Activities Office each academic year.
  2. The Vice President shall perform all functions of the President in the event of the absence or incapacity of the President. Furthermore, the Vice President shall act as the Astronomy Field Representative to the GPSA.
  3. The Treasurer shall handle all financial matters and maintain AGN's financial records. This includes responsibility for submitting appropriate budget forms to the GPSAFC and the Astronomy Department.
  4. The Web Administrator shall handle all matters pertaining to the maintenance and updating of AGN's website and scheduling, including setting and updating the schedule for the Grad Student/Postdoc seminar and other special events, and will further facilitate events by adding them to the Cornell Events Calendar and by booking space in the department.

Article 3: Executive Board

The Executive Board shall consist of AGN's officers and the Advisor. The term of the members of the Board shall coincide with the terms of the officers.
